Moreover, it was Sahir who demanded that the name of the composer be announced along with the name of the composer in the film songs aired on the radio program ‘Vividh Bharati’ a demand which was well heeded to. He always considered the lyrics of film songs pivotal to their popularity. At the time of his stepping into the film industry, his collection of poems ‘Talkhiyan’, had become acclaimed in the extreme. Sahir’s empathy was not just limited to his poems, as a matter of fact, he never took seat of the man-pulled rickshaws of that time.Īt the young age of 18, the fame that Sahir obtained as a poet was something that very few others ever got. Jitani bhi bildinge thi, setho ne bant li hai Rahane ko ghar nahi hai, sara jahan hamara What followed was Sahir penning some memorable lyrics that not only dovetailed beautifully with the film’s story, but also reflected the poet’s social concerns, perspectives, and humanism.

Although the film director wanted to take the duo of Shankar-Jai Kishan as composers, only Khayyam fulfilled Sahir's stipulation.

I always find myself wondering who they are talking about when they say 'Anuradha'.When Sahir Ludhianvi was writing the lyrics for Ramesh Sehgal's film "Phir Subh Hogi", based on Russian novelist Dostoevsky's famous novel "Crime and Punishment", he stipulated that film’s music would be scored only by a composer who has read Dostoevsky's novel. Namewise, Anu is my preference, actually. And I am eagerly waiting to get my hands on the books. I still have your story about Alexander stored on my comp (it gets transferred every time I change my machine) I really liked the background that went into a seemingly simple love story. Luckily, producers like Aamir Khan are making sure their films come out with all the frills on the official DVD.Īs for your books, I am sure I will enjoy them, Madhu, and I am not just saying that.

I wish the DVD producers would learn that from the West - get out a DVD not only with the full movie but also the deleted scenes, any footage with the cast and crew - imagine how nice it would be to have a DVD of Teesri Manzil with no cuts, and some trivia from the sets? For people like me (and I am guessing, for you), that would be like manna from heaven! My theory is that the VCDs and DVDs are made by frustrated filmmakers / wannabe heroes etc. And I absolutely adore that the change in that man is so drastic and that he is able to hide his real nature until the last minute when he is sure that victory is at hand. I love that, in the manner of the best mysteries, it is the most unexpected person who is the criminal. So with a story that moved at lightning pace ( with a few stops for the songs), several red herrings, solid clues, excellent casting, cinematography, direction, music and a reasonable amount of suspense which they managed to keep going until the end ( oh why couldn't they have chopped off the l-o-n-g fight sequence, and added the missing chunks to the DVD?) - what was NOT to like about Teesri Manzil? I like that the denouement comes so unexpectedly and that the red herrings are so wonderfully fishy. In a notable two-decade career, he has been acclaimed for redefining contemporary Indian film music and contributing to the success of several films.

The picturisations were absolutely stunning, as I would have expected from Vijay Anand, and I am sure Shammi Kapoor did not mind RD Burman quite as much when he heard the tunes that the latter had composed for this film. Working in Indias film industries, international cinema and theatre, Rahman is one of the worlds all-time best-selling recording artists. And while the songs were not quite as integrated into the storyline as I would have liked, it is still a good watch.
